CHARACTER
Name: Lydia Martin
Canon: Teen Wolf
Age: 17
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Daughter of Aphrodite; Legacy of Melinoe.
Demigod abilities: As the daughter of Aphrodite, Lydia has the standard abilities of appearance changing and speaking French, she also has amokinesis. However, this ability has a tendency to 'leak' leading others to be attracted to her either when they otherwise might not be, which is why she tends to take guys (and girls) who profess an interest in her with a grain of salt it's just her demigod magic after all, it isn't 'real'. And it's not like having charmspeak, because while it might make someone more inclined to do things for her, it's not as specifically directed as charmspeak, and having someone be in love with you also means they can become obsessive or jealous. As the granddaughter of Melinoe, she is sometimes referred to as a 'Demigod Geiger Counter for Death'. She is able to sense death as it occurs, but over the years she has been able to develop some ability to get a sense of it before it happens and take part in being able to prevent it. She also has a unique ability to scream when frightened that can be heard by any demigod within a range roughly equivalent to the size of the camp, a throwback power that ties into the idea of the wailing spirits of the dead.
Personality: Lydia is one of the most popular girls at her high school. She comes from a rich family, only wears the best clothes, and would seem to have her pick of the guys at her school. Lydia is a "queen bee" when it comes to social maneuvering; she is extremely adept at presenting a facade of being superficial and thoughtless. Status is important to her, because without status in high school you are nothing. Friends, particularly female friends, are often picked at least initially to keep competition close at hand and under a watchful eye. Lydia is also a bit of a man-eater and certainly an unapologetic admirer of the male form.
Dig a little deeper, and something more substantial is presented. Get past the superficial bullshit, and a surprising sense of loyalty is revealed. It takes a lot to earn Lydia's trust, but once it is earned, she is willing to put herself into risky situations at worst and inconvenient ones at best to help her friends out. Likewise, unlike most children of Aphrodite, when Lydia falls in love she isn't fickle about it. She dedicates her whole heart when she falls in love, but at the same time Lydia refuses to be victim to her own emotion, tending to be skeptical of others when they profess feelings for her, at least initially. It's not to say she can't enjoy casual relationships, but when Lydia's involved, she's extremely invested. She knows the important distinction between wanting a boyfriend and wanting a "distraction", showing a certain understanding of the nature of love that is an intuitive attribute of her parentage.
An important note about Lydia's personality is specifically in regard to her intellect. She has a genius level IQ but has often taken great pains to hide it from others, having previously even opted to deliberately fail tests in order to maintain her social face. But Lydia can be counted on to have an expansive knowledge of everything from archaic languages to chemistry recipes right out of the Anarchist's Cookbook.
At her core, Lydia is a lot like most teenagers. She presents a confident facade, but is also just as scared and alone inside as young adults tend to be. Both of her parents love her, but her father is somewhat distant and while her adoptive mother is deeply devoted to her, time apart has created something of a barrier. She keeps constantly getting exposed to death and danger; and let's face it, her friends? They are not exactly average or normal.
It would be very easy to say that Lydia went from a spoiled, shallow girl to a more substantial, developed person who cares about the people around over the course of seasons one through three. She has been accustomed, most of her life, to getting what she wants and accomplishing her goals with very little trouble or struggle. But it's not like she's made some kind of moral heel turn. Quite simply? Over the years the stakes have gotten higher, and that means investing more.
AU History: Lydia's history doesn't start with her, but rather, her parents. Her father is a son of Melinoe, the Goddess of Ghosts, and the woman she believed to be her mother, a daughter of Aphrodite. They had been unable to conceive, and so Lydia's 'mom' prayed to Aphrodite for help. Aphrodite answered in an unexpectedly direct way; seducing Lydia's father and becoming pregnant with her daughter's husband's child. This unique parentage resulted in the birth of Lydia Martin (believed by some to be the second most significant event to occur in Beacon Hills). Despite the circumstances of Lydia's birth, her mother was so eager to have a baby that it didn't matter that Lydia was not her natural child, but the smallest crack that would later become a rift resulting in divorcing her husband would start to grow from that point. They would separate before Lydia's thirteenth birthday.
Her family had been adequately prepared for dealing with a demi-god child, even if they didn't actually inform her of her heritage. They had more than enough money to make sure Lydia got the best education despite her 'ADHD' and by the time she made it into high school, not only was she considered one of the smartest - if not the smartest student in the school, she was also one of the most popular as well, her charm and beauty, hallmarks of her parentage had become evident.
However, at thirteen Lydia got her first true contact with the world of demigods. On the night of a middle school dance, Her paternal grandmother, Melinoe, decided to pay her a visit. The encounter was nightmarish and triggered the latent abilities of her paternal ancestry; for weeks afterward Lydia would awaken screaming from nightmares after waking up in the woods and around town, usually not far from a dead body. Her parents tried to deny what was happening, but Lydia's increasing nightmares and night wanderings kept leading to bodies, and they knew they had no choice: Lydia would have to go to Camp Half-Blood.
If everyone was expecting Lydia to falter in the rustic environment, if anything, she flourished. Aphrodite acknowledged her almost immediately upon entering the Camp and she was installed in the cabin of the Goddess of Love. Her Blessing was the envy of some, as it seemed Aphrodite believed there was very little to have to improve upon when it came to this particular daughter. Lydia's allure is so potent that she's accustomed to people pining for her, but tends to ignore such behavior; privately questioning which is 'real' and which is the result of being a demigod.
Melinoe has made herself something of a nuisance at Camp Half-Blood, and that's putting it lightly. The fact that she has made trouble for the campers and even brought to bear the deaths of at least three of them means that Lydia isn't exactly a fan of Grandma. Fortunately Lydia has been able to prove herself a loyal camper despite Melinoe's actions over the years, and most generally think of her more as Aphrodite's daughter than Melinoe's granddaughter. Except when she screams. Or finds a body.
While Lydia is more a lover than a fighter, she did her part in the Titan War. Her intelligence and affinity for science made her a surprising yet ideal part of the camp forces dedicated to the manufacturing of Greek Fire to be used in battle. Being on the actual battlefield was difficult for her, the premonition of death far too overwhelming for her to be in attendance.
Lydia realizes how lucky she is. Both her biological father and adoptive mother still love her, and to her, her adoptive mother is still 'Mom', while Aphrodite, whom she's never met, is the mother she's never seen. Still, Camp Half-Blood is the only place she can really be herself.

Iris Message:
[Lydia flashes a smile, adjusting her hair briefly with a little lift of her chin.]
So! Another summer at Camp Half-Blood! I'm Lydia Martin, daughter of Aphrodite, and I'm here to tell you that even if you're not the offspring of the Goddess of Love is no reason why you can't look your very best. Daughters of Athena? You'll be pleased to know that very sensible yet stylish braids are a really big thing this year. And sons of Hephaestus? Never discount yourselves; work at the forge provides you with the type of muscles that can make a girl swoon. Sleeveless shirts are always the best choice for you!
But there are also some no's when it comes to Camp Half-Blood fashion. Children of Ares, would it kill you to learn how to get bloodstains out of your shirts? Soda water, seriously. I cannot stress this enough. And as for the Children of Hermes, let's just say, if I could sum up what I'd suggest in one word.../PEDICURES./ It's one thing to be fleet-footed, but totally another to have gnarly toes.
Remember campers, if you have questions about style or love, just drop it in the little pink box in front of Aphrodite's Cabin, and I'll do my best to offer you advice via Iris Message! After all, if we can't help each other with these things, what's the point, right?
