history | Lydia Martin at the Teen Wolf Wiki.
AU history | Lydia Martin is a very big fish from the very small pond of Beacon Hills, California. Her family is one of the richest in town (but due for an economic fall in slightly less than a decade to come). Her parents, while still married (divorce? unthinkable!) live something of a tense lie, and are estranged from each other, maintaining a facade in public in order to maintain their social standing, and while they don't think her daughter notices, she does. Add to that the singular family shame (doesn't every family have one?); the not-so-secret fact that Lydia's paternal grandmother is locked up in the local asylum, Eichen House.

When she was a little girl, Lydia was very close with her grandmother Lorraine; she helped to take care of Lydia and they would often read together - Lydia's favorite story was Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. But her grandmother was always a touch eccentric; Lydia has memories of her grandmother seeming to talk to people who weren't there, and occasionally waking up in the middle of the night to the sound of what seemed like inhuman screams that she was told later by her parents were only screech owls roosting in the trees. If there's concern that Lydia is anything like her grandmother, it's not evident so far.

They sent Lydia to Clarion Academy in order to distance her from both the degrading status of their marriage as well as the potential stigma that comes from having an insane relative. They know she is capable of establishing herself and making a viable match and feel she has a better chance of doing so away from her home, and truth be told as smart as they seem to know her to be, they don't have more expectation of her beyond that. It's Lydia who's made something of herself of her own volition, with intensions to pursue her interest in science and math even after she graduates from high school as well as meet her parents' expectations.

personality | Lydia has always been situated to have the best of everything. She comes from a prosperous family, only wears the best clothes, and has her pick of gentlemen callers. A "queen bee" when it comes to social maneuvering, she at times presents a facade of being superficial and thoughtless. Status is important to her, because without status it one doesn't get very far in life. Friends, particularly female friends, have often been picked to keep competition close at hand and under a watchful eye. In as much as current social norms allow without sacrificing her reputation, she can be something of a man-eater and unapologetic admirer of the male form. But all of this hides what according to some of her teachers is a highly intelligent mind with incredible leadership potential.

Over time at Clarion she has become less inclined to hide her intelligence and more inclined to develop friendships with fellow students with only minimal consideration of class and station. While it might be evidence of a kinder, gentler Lydia, it's also in some part strategic: she's deduced that kindness and amiability earn her more than disdain, and the more friends one has, the better. That being said, she is highly protective of her friends, extremely competitive, and has a rather sharp tongue with little patience for anyone she deems to be foolish.

At her core, Lydia is a lot like most teenagers. She presents a confident facade, but is also just as scared and alone inside as other young adults tend to be. Her parents are distant and she is brutally aware of the limits society holds her to and the high societal (but not intellectual) expectations that have been placed on her.

It would be very easy to say that Lydia is a spoiled, shallow girl, but the potential for a more substantial, developed person who cares about the people around is well on her way to maturing. She has been accustomed most of her life to getting what she wants and accomplishing her goals with very little trouble or struggle. The opportunity to alleviate that is often the guiding motivation when she's inclined to take risks, though when confronted with the supernatural challenges of Clarion Academy, she may finally be faced with something that is not so easily grasped, and that may be difficult for her.

SAMPLES

sample 1 | While travel, particularly transcontinental travel, is viewed as a hardship by most, Lydia finds it strangely liberating. The summary of her journey is always the same; a long drive in her father's sedan to the railway station in San Francisco, the arduous traverse across the broad country from west coast to east, and then another car trip through the welcoming gates of Clarion Academy. And of course, the same, only reverse, to return home. Even if Lydia is starting to think of the academy as her home far more than her family's house in Beacon Hills. At home, smiles are strained, the weight of secrets is heavy, and the expectations on her shoulders are both lighter and so much more heavy - to find a good family to marry into and raise up her family in doing so. But at Clarion? It's her mind that's valued, and when people smile, they mean it.

It helps that they always start off a day early so that she and her mother can overnight in the city, enjoy the shops and dining that San Francisco offers. Natalie always wants Lydia to look her best, and while French silk may be more expensive in San Francisco, Chinese silk is far more plentiful and in her opinion, well made. Or so she tells Lydia. And Lydia nods and smiles, and does as told, and tries to evoke some kind of simple pleasure before her inevitable hours of travel. She tries to look forward rather than back, away from the shadows and the grandmother she knows she can't see, shouldn't even speak of, and instead tries to keep her eyes on the light, on the prospect of possibility.

And that's why the week long train trip is so freeing. Lydia can be whomever she wants - within the considerable confines of first class, but if she's feeling daring, why not a trip to second class, or even, dare she venture, third? Even if there might be hobos! Especially if there are hobos. If she chooses to read a periodical about the latest advancements in science, none of these strangers have the right to impose their questions or presumptions on her. She can choose to converse or not as it suits her, and the view out of the window as the train chugs along is beautiful.

She feels like she's shedding an old skin, or emerging from a coccoon, every time she leaves Beacon Hills to return to the academy, able to be herself, to engage in higher learning that satisfies her hunger for knowledge, and can leave the shadows behind.
